SC4SM (Stem Cells for Safer Medicines) is an independent, public-private collaboration that uses stem cells for early safety testing of new medicines. This not-for-profit initiative brings together scientific expertise from across the academic and industrial communities to provide guidance, funding and coordination for research.
SC4SM was established as a direct consequence of the UK Stem Cell Initiative, a strategy to make the UK a global leader in stem cell research. The report recommended the formation of a partnership to develop stem cell models for early toxicity testing of new medicines.
SC4SM’s aim is to develop techniques for the application of stem cells in the testing of new medicines. This work will help to identify potential side effects much earlier in the research process before lengthy and expensive trials are carried out.
SC4SM adopts a unique, cross-stakeholder approach to research and operates as a pre-competitive partnership to share data, knowledge and expertise.
